Mapei Product Guide
Mapei makes four main grout lines. Choosing the right one before you calculate matters — bag sizes and coverage rates differ between products.
The go-to choice for most tile projects. Keracolor S is a polymer-modified sanded grout for joints from 1/8" to 1/2". Available in 40 colors, mold and mildew resistant.
For joints narrower than 1/8" and for delicate tile surfaces including polished marble, glass tile, and metal tile that would be scratched by sand particles.
Mapei's premium cement grout. Works as both sanded and unsanded (joints 1/16" to 1/2"). Sets in 3 hours, resists efflorescence, stains, and shrinkage better than Keracolor.
Two-component epoxy grout for commercial kitchens, food processing areas, pools, and any surface exposed to chemicals, extreme moisture, or heavy traffic.

| 24×48 slab | ~240 sq ft | ~160 sq ft | ~120 sq ft | ~80 sq ft |
⚠ Values are estimates based on industry formulas. Actual coverage depends on substrate absorption, tile warpage, and installer technique. Always verify against the bag label. Add 10–15% for waste.

Contractor Tips
Tips from experienced tile setters to get perfect results every time with Mapei products.
Mapei grout color can vary slightly between production lots. When buying, check the lot numbers on the bags and buy one extra. Store it sealed for future repairs — trying to match color later is nearly impossible.
Mapei recommends Ultracolor Plus FA for wet areas, showers, steam rooms, and areas with temperature fluctuations. Keracolor is perfectly fine for dry floors and walls where moisture isn't a factor.
Sealing too early traps moisture. Wait 72 hours after grouting before applying sealer to Keracolor. Ultracolor cures faster — 24 hours is usually safe. Check the specific product TDS for your conditions.
When mixing multiple bags for a large project, keep your water-to-powder ratio identical. Slight variations produce slightly different shades, especially noticeable in darker colors. Use a measuring container.
Hot surfaces and direct sun cause grout to set too fast before you can clean the haze. Work in shade or cool conditions. If ambient temperature exceeds 90°F, start early morning or use a misting approach.
In-Depth Guide
Mapei uses the tile industry standard formula to determine grout coverage. The key variables are: tile length and width (in inches), grout joint width (inches), grout joint depth (tile thickness, inches), and grout density (lbs per cubic foot — approximately 110 for sanded, 100 for unsanded).
The formula calculates joint volume per square foot, then converts it to pounds using grout density. A 25 lb bag of Mapei Keracolor S covers about 67–75 sq ft for a 12×12 tile with a 3/16" joint — but this changes dramatically with tile and joint size.
For 2" hex mosaic tiles, the same bag covers only 8–12 sq ft because the many small tiles create a much higher joint-to-area ratio. Always run the numbers for your specific tile before buying.
For projects over 500 sq ft, contractors typically order by the pallet. Mapei pallets contain 48 bags (1,200 lbs). Knowing your exact bag count helps you determine whether to buy individual bags at retail or order a pallet direct from a Mapei distributor — which typically saves 15–25% per bag.
Mapei's stated coverage numbers assume ideal conditions: smooth, non-porous tile, consistent joint depth, and an experienced applicator. In real projects, you can expect 5–15% more consumption due to:
This is why the 10% waste factor in our calculator exists. For textured stone or natural tile, increase the waste factor to 15–20%.
Mapei has an official calculator on their website. Ours uses the same underlying formula but lets you compare products side-by-side, add cost estimates, toggle waste factors, and see the result in the context of bag count — making it easier to plan a purchasing trip. For critical commercial projects, always verify against Mapei's official coverage data and the product TDS (Technical Data Sheet).
